Intro

Hershey is a fun loving french bulldog who enjoys people and other dogs. While she is playful she does have her lazy bouts, which makes her an all-around good dog to have and take care of.

Below is a guide that while help guide you to take care of Hershey. It is mean to give you some structure and context to how to care for Her, but you should employ your better judgement if three are topics that aren’t specifically covered.

I predict that you will not have any issues, however if you do feel free to call or text me at 917-510-4878 while we are abroad.

Walk

MORNING WALK

7:00 AM

This is generally a very quick walk. She should pee one big time and poop twice on most occasions.

MIDDAY WALK

12:00 PM

This walk is generally longer than the morning walk. She should pee one big time but may or may not poop depending on how well she ate and how much she pooped in the morning.

EVENING WALK

5:00 PM

This is the longest walk. She should pee one big time but a few tiny time throughout the walk. She should poop but you shouldn’t worry if she doesn’t poop.

Notes:

  • DO NOT LET HER OFF THE LEASH outside the apartment.

  • Hershey is not used to waiting to get outside from an apartment building, so i suggest carrying her downstairs (especially for the morning walk) to not risk her peeing in the building.

  • Sometimes she could get another walk between any of those times.  This usually depends on how much water she drank.

  • She is pretty friendly to both dogs and people but sometimes jumps up a bit which can be startling to children.

  • Make sure she doesn’t eat anything off the ground.

  • Do not let her pull you. If she pulls you should correct the action with a quick snap of the leash and you should stop walking until she calms down. You can warn her verbally (i.e., “Hershey, stop pulling”).

  • If you have an intense play session with her, she will need to pee shortly after. so it should be followed up with a walk.

Sleep/Play

SLEEP

Hershey is a pretty good sleeper. During the day when sleep while you are working. If she is awake she is usually chewing on a toy or trying to play. After dinner, she will usually start looking for a place to go to sleep for the night. If you dim the lights, she will generally sleep through the night.

At night we generally tether her near her bed to prevent her from either having an accident or getting used to sleeping somewhere she shouldn’t sleep (i.e., couch).

Lastly, we put a towel (supplied) on her bed for comfort and noise reduction.

PLAY

Hershey like to play. She will fetch, wrestle, chew and run. It’s good to know that if you have a play session with her in the house she will probably need to pee shortly after.

If you see her chewing on things that are not her toys, you should reprimand with a stern:

  • “No!” - if she is already chewing; or

  • “Leave it!” - if she is interested and don’t want her to start.

After reprimanding you should remove the item and replace with a toy.

FAQ

what if Hershey gets dirty?

I have put her shampoo in the supply kit. Just follow the directions and dry her off with the the provided towel.

what if Hershey is being stubborn on her walk?

This sometimes happens. Hershey is crazy curious and super friendly so she want to check everything, everybody and every doggy out. You should use your judgement here. The leash itself is 6ft long so you should be able to social distance and allow her to play with other dogs. But you also don’t have to she has a number of puppy friends in NJ…so she doesn’t need any new friends.

what if Hershey vomits?

This happens on occasion too. It doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. It could mean that she played too hard after eating or she ate something that isn’t digestible. If she is continually vomiting, you should take her to the emergency vet (above).

what if Hershey bites someone?

She shouldn’t do this. However, just know she is up-to-date on all of her vaccinations. You can give the person bit my information so that i can deal with what happens.

what if Hershey gets bit or injured?

Make a vet appoint for asap and get her checked out. If the wound is bad, take her to the emergency vet as soon as possible.

why is Hershey snoring? is there something wrong?

French Bulldogs are known to snore because of the type of snout they have. I wouldn’t worry about it.

what if Hershey cries when I am unable to play with her?

Generally, Hershey doesn’t cry unless she is tethered and there is activity in the areas that she wants to participate in. If you are working, you can just release her from the tether, if applicable, and she will either lie/sit next to you; go to her bed or entertain herself.

should i leave food and water by Hershey’s bed?

I don’t. Especially not at night. i generally don’t let Hershey eat or drink after her last meal. Both her food and water bowls go in the sink around 7:30 pm whether she finished eating or not. this will prevent her from drinking enough water to force her to have an accident throughout the night.

what about pee pads?

Hershey was never successfully trained to use pee pads so accident will be completely dependent on your having a good walking schedule.

can i leave Hershey by herself?

Yes. The rules for bedtime should apply her. Tether her near her bed and leave a toy or two. She should sleep through your time away. Please don’t leave her for more than 3 hours alone. Also, you should feel free to take her with you as well (depending on where you are going).

what commands does Hershey know?

Hershey knows only a few commands, but and sometimes need you to get her attention for her to obey them:

  • Sit (pretty good)

  • Stay (ok)

  • Come (ok)

  • No/Leave it (Better than ok)

If you want to teach her some commands, feel free. I follow this guide when teaching her different things: 30 Day Perfect Pup

what are some things that i can do with Hershey?

Hershey likes to do a bunch of things:

  • fetch

  • wrestle

  • cuddle

  • go for a light short jog
